This is a response to our exam project.

I used the quote 'Just because it's in print, doesn't mean it's the gospel' to produce a 'Z-Fold' book that confronted the practice of false advertisng.

I took influence from adverts created in 1980's (In my opinion the golden age for consumerism, excess and self indulgence)

And combined it with the idealism of the 'American Dream' to create a collection of imaginary products available within a fictional resort called Berimbau Bay.

The book showed two sides to advertising, the idealist, fabricated image portrayed by the advertiser.






And the more obscene reality of the product.







I presented this book in a suitcase along with some physical examples of the items I had created within the book. Such as 'Precision Golf Balls' and 'Aqua Caj Swimwear'.

When I Grow Up... (Children In Need)

Thursday 18th November was the opening of our exhibition for Children In Need called 'When I Grow Up...'

The exhibition has several different elements. First of all we set a brief to all 3 years of Graphic Design & Illustration asking them to produce one A3 image about what they wanted to be when they grew up (as a child).

Then we were kindly given permission to do a workshop with the Year 6 pupils at St. Luke's Primary School where we gave them the same brief about what they want to be when they grow up.

When the two sets of work were completed we put them into the exhibition space along side each other. The university students works are on the top and bottom tiers and the children's work runs through the middle.

We collated the works into a catalogue, beautifully risograph printed by Elliott Denny at Victory Press. Which we sold at the private view on Thursday for the very reasonable price of £4.

Along side this we also successfully completed a sponsored 24 hour drawing marathon. The final piece was loosely based on the phrase 'The World Is Your Oyster' and was open to all contributions by students at the Grande Parade Campus at the University of Brighton.

The opening night was was a huge success and we raised over £500 with all proceeds going to Children in Need.

Huge thanks go to Charlie Sheppard, Matt Lyver and Will Hewitt who co-ordinated the event with me.

All 3 years of GDI who helped support the project with submissions for the exhibition and for helping lend a hand with the 24 hour drawing.

It was an amazing achievement to have pulled this off in just over 3 weeks and there is no way we could have done it with out you!

Catch Me If You Can

Last year I used a project to practice editorial illustration. I would use the rule of '3rd page, 4th Column, Any Newspaper' and respond to whatever story may be on that page that day.

I had a good response from the project and was advised to send the work to The Guardian. The response I had from them was also good but they made a point about my use of pencil and that pencil doesn't print well. So I have decided to take this project on once more in my spare time using the same rules as last time but with a different approach to the drawing.

Clean Kill

This is a response to our first brief of 3rd year. The project was about 'Oxymorons'.

We were given a selection of oxymorons to choose from and our aim was to effectively communicate that oxymoron. I chose 'Clean Kill'....

Class of 84'

So 3rd year begins! This summer I responded to the word 'undertaking' as part of our summer project. I decided that there were a few things I needed to work on - Familiar Characters, Type, and using a Graphics Tablet. So I labelled the work as - 'Undertaking the learning of new ideas and processes'.

The work is just a practice exercise really, but is based on my favourite year for popular culture - 1984.

Big.

So I'm still working on this character development stuff, I've been spending a lot of time on a big drawing, working on the Wacom tablet. Though I felt the full force of not having hard copies of things yesterday when I forgot to save an entire days work! I've been enjoying this practice but looking forward to using a paper and pencil again!

Just got back from Bestival... What a hot dinger of a weekend. I found out a week or so before the festival weekend that the one and only Mr. Motivator would be doing a 45 minute set on the Saturday so I put together a costume to honor the great man himself...

but it just got better....

and better...

and better!
